New Energy Nexus (NEX), in partnership with the Saigon Hi-tech Park Incubation Center (SHTP-IC) and with support from GIZ, will organize the first Vietnam Smart Energy Hackathon at the BKHCM-UP Co-working Space in Ho Chi Minh City.
The event aims to accelerate the development of innovative software solutions to tackle energy challenges.
Developers, data scientists, and energy industry professionals will compete in a two-day coding and business model competition with VND100 million ($4,270) in prize money. The Smart Energy Hackathon will catalyze momentum and increase awareness around the importance of energy innovation. Applications close on May 30.
Hackathons are creative sprint-like events to identify new solutions to problems while providing a platform for teams to form and potentially take ideas further into new ventures afterwards.
The Smart Energy Hackathon provides startups with a path to develop localized software solutions that span the entire energy value chain, including the Internet of Things (IoT), electric vehicle (EV) charging management, smart grids, energy management, on-demand customer services, and more. The digitization of the energy industry in Vietnam will allow greater flexibility for utilities to manage the integration of renewable energy sources, grid protection, and smart asset management, and provide better customer service.
The shared vision of the organizers is to develop a sustainable energy ecosystem in Vietnam that supports energy entrepreneurship, corporate innovation, and smart energy investment through a bottom-up approach. Building a fertile foundation for energy startups is the first step to gaining mass adoption and support from government and corporations.
The term “Smart energy” refers to an intelligent integration of renewable energy sources for low / no-carbon generation (solar, wind, sustainable biomass, hydro), efficient distribution and transmission (smart and cross-border grids, energy markets, infrastructure) and efficient and optimal consumption (demand side management, storage, smart meters, prosumers) forming the future energy ecosystem.
NEX is an international organization that supports clean energy entrepreneurs with funds, accelerators and networks. It started in California and also operates programs in China, India, Southeast Asia, and East Africa.
SHTP-IC is the high-tech startup incubator at the Saigon Hi-Tech Park. It has 12 years of experience in startup support activities and runs programs to promote and support startups in commercializing, calling for investment, and scaling up.
